Lessons from the Field: Jaunt’s Best Practices for Shooting in 360

The Jaunt ONE on a shoot in Yellowstone National Park

Since Jaunt started producing cinematic virtual reality, we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to make a great VR experience. Today, I’m pleased to share The Cinematic VR Field Guide: A Guide to Best Practices for Shooting in 360° from Jaunt Studios.

Filming in VR for the first time can be daunting since many of the old rules of cinematography no longer apply. This guide provides filmmakers with everything they need to know when entering into VR filmmaking. It includes an introduction to the basics, plus sections about camera motion, mounts and rigging, directing the action, getting out of the way, blocking and “framing” in 360°, lighting and exposure, and more. Soon we’ll be publishing additional sections on sound, post-production, editing, compositing, color, and adding interactivity.

We’ll be treating this as a living document and updating it as new technologies and techniques emerge. In the meantime, we want to hear from the VR community about what is or isn’t working for you so that we can improve the guide to help more people create compelling content in VR.

Download the guide from our website (PDF, 24mb) and email us at [email protected]. We’re excited to hear your thoughts.
